His mother started by baking and selling bread from a house in Low Holland. In 1897 his mother and father (Thomas Hunter) built Cliffe Hill Terrace. Just after the first world war Arthur Hunter started a fish shop in a wash-house down Cliffe Hill Terrace, and then moved on to making icecream in a wooden hut at the top of New Row in Cliffe Cottages, delivering on a motorbike and sidecar.
In the early 1920's Arthur bought the two houses. These were still used to make and sell home-made icecream by his son Billy until his retirement in the early 1990's. His icecream van was a familiar sight in surrounding villages, and was built in 1924. During its lifetime, the van had 3 different chassis until its retirement and after a long period of non use when it was placed into storage, the van was restored to its former glory.
